MIRZA, March 10 � In a tragic accident , at least 17 Himalayan Griffon vultures (Gyps himalayensis) have died and 11 others have fallen critically sick after they consumed a cow carcass today at Agsia near Palasbari-Agsia PWD road under Kamrup East Forest Division in Kamrup district .
The veterinary officials from Vulture Conservation and Breeding Centre located at Rani have rushed to the site of the incident and treatment is on to cure the injured vultures.
It may be mentioned here that Himalayan Griffon vultures, migratory birds coming to Assam during winter every year � have been dying in South Kamrup every year and at least 50 Himalayan Griffons have died in last two years in South Kamrup. During last 24 hours, more than 30 Himalayan Griffons have died in Kamalpur and Agsia ( Palasbari ), causing concerns for the naturalists.
It is believed that the cow was administered diclofenac sodium, a pain killer drug before it died. And it is due to this drug Himalayan Griffons died after consuming the cow carcass.
However, the exact cause of the incident has not yet been ascertained and the investigations is on.
