1.66 lakh people hit by floods in State

GUWAHATI, June 14 - Altogether 1,66,836 people in 370 villages of seven districts in the State have been affected by the first wave of flood of the year. The affected districts are Hojai, Cachar, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Karimganj, Karbi Anglong (East) and West Karbi Anglong.

An Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) flood bulletin said here this evening that flood has taken the toll of one human life in Bokakhat revenue circle of Golaghat district under the impact of flood.

The Dhansiri (South) at Numaligarh in Golaghat district, the Barak at Annapurna Ghat in Cachar district and at Badarpurghat in Karimganj district, the Katakhal at Matizuri in Hailakandi district and the Kushiyara at Karimganj in Karimganj district are flowing above their respective danger levels.

Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been pressed into service in the flood-hit areas for search and rescue operations. In all, 422 marooned people have been rescued from the flood-hit areas of Karimganj, Hailakandi, Cachar and Golaghat districts by these teams.

The district administrations of Karimganj, Hailakandi, Karbi Anglong (East) and Golaghat have set up 155 camps and 35,927 inmates are taking shelter in these camps, the flood bulletin said.
