163-year-old Royal Chadak puja at Gauripur under way

GAURIPUR, April 12 - The 163-year-old historic Chadak puja of the Royal family of Gauripur Zamindary Estate began on April 10 last and will continue to April 14 next on the premises of Saktidham Temple situated along the bank of Laukhowa beel.

The five-day programme includes adhibas, Dhupbati khela, Katabhanga, Chandinas and the main Chadak puja. A 11-member team of charakia headed by Sankar Deobangshi alias Goda will display a number of marvellous and dreadful games based on the Shiva Puran including piercing of tongue by an iron stick, moving of chadak carefully tied in a Simalu tree post etc., on Sunday evening. Hundreds of devotees will assemble at the puja premises and offer puja to Lord Shiva. A big mela will also be held on the occasion where traders from greater Gauripur area are expected to take part.
