JORHAT, July 9 The Jorhat district administration demolished at least 15 illegal concrete structures on the bank of Tocklaijan rivulets in Milannagar area in the town during an eviction-drive today.

The boundary walls, huts and houses, which were demolished today, were identified as illegal structures on government land.

Expressing dismay at the eviction process, some locals said that they had started concrete constructions on the bank of the rivulet as they were never served any notice by the district administration.

We will clean the entire rivulet. Each of the illegal construction will be demolished. About 2 km of the area in Tocklaijan has been cleaned today, said an Additional Deputy Commissioner in Jorhat.

A survey report prepared by the Jorhat district administration pointed out over 150 encroachments in Bhogdoi river and the two rivulets, Tocklaijan and Tarajan, in the town which led to water-logging and flash-floods in several localities causing hardship to the citizens in the town in past four weeks.

Tocklaijan was encroached at 54 spots, while Tarajan was found to be illegally occupied at 12 spots. Moreover, over 90 encroachments were identified along the Bhogdoi River during the survey.

On Tuesday, the district administration started cleaning up Tarajan and Tocklaijan and demolished some illegal constructions in the west circle. Officials from district administration claimed that they cleaned a 2-km area in Tarajan in the east circle and another 3km in the Tocklaijan in the west revenue circle in the town.
