DIBRUGARH, May 13 At least fifteen members of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Sammittee (KMSS) sustained injuries during a police baton charge on them in Chabua town this afternoon after they blocked the NH-37 for more then an hour in protest against the failure of the police to arrest one Karuna Borah, the prime accused in the food grain scam in the Rongchangi Naduwa area.

Karuna Borah is the secretary of Rongchangi Naduwa Cooperative Society. Borah has failed to distribute ration under PDS to the beneficiaries for the months of November, December 2014 and January 2015, KMSS leaders told The Assam Tribune. A police case against Karuna Borah is pending at Chabua PS. The case has been reportedly lodged by the Food and Civil Supplies department.

After successfully dispersing the protestors by use of batons, police arrested five persons including KMSS leaders - Kumud Gogoi, working president, KMSS, Dibrugarh district, Biswajit Chetri, organising secretary, KMSS, Dibrugarh district, Biswajit Phukan, secretary, Chatra Mukti Sangram Sammittee, Dibrugarh district and Jagdish Gohain, secretary, Chatra Mukti Sangram Sammittee, Chabua unit.

The KMSS and its affiliated organisations had earlier staged protest against the alleged corruption in the distribution of rations under PDS. They had also submitted a memorandum in the month of February last, seeking investigation and immediate arrest of the guilty but the administration had failed to act. Among other demands, the peasant body also sought explanation for the alleged diversion of funds meant for the Chabua-Tengakhat Road.
