15-day Raas festival at Patacharkuchi from tomorrow

PATACHARKUCHI, Nov 10 - Preparations are almost complete for celebration of the 15-day Raas festival at the Siva Durga Dhaam here from November 12 to 26.`

This year the celebration entered its 26th edition and the celebration committee formed for the purpose has planned to include various religious and cultural programmes along with the Raas Leela of Lord Sri Krishna with an intention to increase the footfall of visitors.

Taking a leaf out of their earlier experience, the organisers are confident of being able to attract more visitors from all over the state this year. The organisers have therefore left no stone unturned to ensure that the large number of visitors can go back satisfied with the various arrangements.

The preparatory committee informed that this year the celebration will be totally plastic free and appealed to the devotees to cooperate in their mission. Arrangement for placing numerous dustbins at the festival site have been completed, while close circuit cameras too have been installed for easy monitoring of the activities.

Celebration committee president Binod Roy informed the mediapersons at a press meet that this year the 15-day Raas festival will be formally declare open by Jayanta Malla Baruah, Chairman of Assam Tourism Development Corporation at 5-30 pm on November 12.

At least 150 clay idols depicting the myths and stories enshrined in the Vedas, Mahabharata and Ramayana have been installed in brightly decorated stalls by a team of artisans working round the clock. The river bed of the Kaldia has in the meantime been decorated with lights. A live train show, besides abduction of Sita by Ravana will also be displayed by clay idols with the help of fusion lights in the river bed.

Further, various competitions on Biya Naam, lokageet, fashion show in traditional attire, quiz competition, drawing contest, storytelling, martial art contest, etc., will also be organised during the 15-day celebration.

Artistes from Kolkata will also perform cultural programmes at the venue. A press meet in this regard was attended by executive president Prakash Sarma, secretary Ananda Talukdar and other members.

Meanwhile, numerous Raas festivals have been planned in Bajali sub-division, namely Baghmara with nine-day programme, at Helana with nine-day programme, at Kuwara with five-day programme, at Pathsala with 15-day programme, besides five-day programme at Uzanbarbari etc.

At Kuwara, Transport and Industry Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary will inaugurate the festival at 5.30 pm on November 11. At Baghmara, Dr Ranjit Deka will declare open the main archway of the Raas festival, while at Helana, Hrishikesh Goswami, Press Adviser to the Chief Minister will declare open the festival.
