GAURIPUR, Nov 9 - The 207th Raas festival at the historic Madan Mohan Temple of Coochbehar, which was established in 1889, will start from 9 am of November 11 and continue upto November 25.

The historic Raas festival will be inaugurated by Paban Katian, District Magistrate of Coochbehar. A big religious procession will also be brought out followed by cultural troupes of greater Coochbehar area.

It may be mentioned here that Maharaja Nripendra Narayan during the early part of the19th century built the Madan Mohan Temple on the bank of the Bairagi tank and installed the idol of Lord Krishna, which is popularly called Madan Mohan and crafted from eight metals.

Alongside, there are three other deities of Ma Kali, Ma Tara and Ma Bhawani. It may perhaps be pertinent to add here that in the temple under reference the idol of Lord Krishna was installed without Radha as per the advice of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankaradeva.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will attend the Raas festival on November 13 and will offer puspanjali on the deity.

The 15-day Raas festival includes various cultural and religious programmes, including devotional songs. A big mela will also be held in the playground near the Silver Jubilee Road.
