145 in fray for LS polls in State

GUWAHATI, April 8 - A total of 145 candidates remain in fray from the State for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, after completion of the process of withdrawal of nominations.

While 41 candidates are in fray in the five constituencies going to the polls in the first phase on April 11, another 50 are in fray in the five seats which will vote in the second phase of polls on April 18, and 54 are contesting in the four constituencies which will go to the elections in the third phase on April 23.

Today was the last date for withdrawal of nominations by candidates in the four constituencies � Guwahati, Dhubri, Barpeta and Kokrajhar � which are going to polls in the third phase.

Two candidates of Guwahati constituency withdrew their nominations. They are Pranab Jyoti Das (Independent) and Ranvijay Kumar Rai (Rashtriya Jansambhavna Party).

In addition, two Independent candidates for Dhubri constituency � Asrof Ali and Selina Sultana � withdrew their nominations.

Besides, one candidate, Safiur Rahman (Independent), withdrew nomination for the Barpeta constituency.

However, there were no withdrawals in Kokrajhar constituency.

A total of 62 candidates had filed their nominations from the four seats of third phase. The nominations of three candidates who had filed papers for the Kokrajhar constituency had been found invalid and rejected during scrutiny on April 5.

Now, altogether 54 candidates remain in fray for the four constituencies which will go to the polls in the third phase on April 23, including 17 candidates from Guwahati, 15 from Dhubri, 13 from Barpeta, and nine from Kokrajhar.
