144th birth anniversary of Bir Birsa Munda observed

KALAIGAON, Nov 17 - The 144th birth anniversary of freedom fighter Bir Birsa Munda was observed at the Bishnu Rabha Kristi Sangha premises of Udalguri on November 15 with a day-long programme.

The function was organised by the All Bodo Students� Union of Udalguri; All Adivasi Students� Association, Assam (AASAA), Udalguri and All Santhali Students� Union (ASSU) of Udalguri respectively.

Other student organisations, namely All Gorkha Students� Union (AGSU) and All Assam Bengali Youth Students� Federation (AABYSF) etc., also attended the function.The programme started with the hoisting of three flags. Pinky Borgayari, Revenue Circle Officer of Udalguri hoisted the National Flag while Lohit Chandra Boro, president of ABSU�s Udalguri district committee and Prakash Bara, president of AASAA�s Udalguri district committee hoisted their respective flags.

Jayanta Das,senior journalist paid floral tributes in memory of Bir Birsa Munda while Longnit Teron, Superintendent of Police, Udalguri released two pairs of pigeons in a symbolic gesture of peace and harmony.

Speaking on the occasion, he thanked the organisers for showing a good example of communal harmony and friendship. According to him, the programme would set an example for others to follow.

The open session was held at 11 am. Dipen Boro, social worker and vice president of ABSU�s central committee inaugurated the open session which was presided over by Nilakanta Goyari,former secretary of Bodo Sahitya Sabha.The welcome speech was delivered by Lala Smith, adviser of AASAA. Noted writer Sanjoy Kumar Tanti attended the session as the chief guest while Deben Oraon, general secretary of AASAA attended as the appointed speaker.
