NEW DELHI, April 23 The Election Commission has declared 1.41 lakh voters as Doubtful Voters in Assam, even as the Commission denied presence of large numbers of citizens of Bangladesh and Pakistan in electoral rolls of Assam.

The EC had stated that as on date there are a total of 1,41,733 persons marked with D in the electoral rolls of Assam. The voters categorised as D are not allowed to vote.

The EC stated that it is not a fact that a large number of citizens from Pakistan and Bangladesh are in electoral rolls of Assam, Minister of Law and Justice DV Sadananda Gowda told the Lok Sabha in reply to a question by Sushmita Dev and Jyotiraditya Scindia.

The EC had stated that on receipt of order from the Tribunal or from any competent court declaring a person as foreigner, verification is carried out by the concerned Electoral Registration Officer immediately, as to whether his name has been enrolled in the electoral rolls or not and if the name is found in the roll then his name is deleted from the relevant part of the electoral rolls after observing the requisite formalities.

This process is followed strictly to remove the names of the foreign citizens from the electoral roll, the Minister said.

Meanwhile, according to figures furnished by the Minister, Barpeta, Dhubri and Nagaon have the highest number of D voters in Assam. At least 13,026 D category voters are in Dhubri, 15,357 in Nagaon and 22,751 in Barpeta.
