TURA, July 16 - A 14-year-old minor girl was raped and then forced into a marriage she did not want even as no one filed a complaint against the culprit. The accused was arrested yesterday after the matter was informed to SP of West Garo Hills.
The minor is now pregnant after the sexual assault. The incident occurred at Goner Gaon village under Phulbari Police Station in West Garo Hills.
According to the mother of the victim, the accused, Akkabar Ali (40) of Bholarbitha used to frequent their house for close to 10 years. The victim�s family apparently had been living in a plot of land belonging to the accused.
�The incident took place when I went to visit my family at Nagarbandha in Assam. While we were away, my daughter was at home. The accused came and did the unthinkable with her. He even threatened to kill me and my family leading to my daughter keeping quiet after the incident,� said the mother.
�However, we later came to know that she had been sexually assaulted by him. When we reported the matter to the village elders, he again came home and took my daughter from our house,� added the mother.
The accused, in an effort to save himself, married the minor. She has been married for about two months now. However, once the information came to the knowledge of the police yesterday, a team from Phulbari outpost arrested the accused.
�We have received an FIR from the family and the accused has been arrested. The case has been forwarded to Tura Women�s PS,� said a senior police officer.
