ITANAGAR, May 22 - Altogether 14 people, including eleven women, have died in a grisly road accident at a remote place under West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh today.
District Superintendent of Police Dr A Koan has confirmed the accident saying 14 people were killed and one seriously injured in the mishap when the vehicle they were traveling in skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge.
The critically injured lady was, later, evacuated to GNRC Hospitals in Guwahati for better treatment.
The tragic accident happened at a remote place in between Betchelling and Lungdur village under Kalaktang Circle in West Kameng district.
The SP informed that the victims were traveling along the rural road towards Boha, a far-flung village, to attend one of their relatives� last rites there.
He informed that rescue teams have been sent to the place of accident to retrieve the bodies which he said will take time.
Meanwhile, Power (Electrical) Minister Tenzing Norbu Thongdok, who represents Kalaktang constituency in the State Assembly, has rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.
CM announces relief: Mourning the accident victims, Chief Minister Kalikho Pul has announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 2 lakh to the critically injured person.
Terming the accident �very unfortunate�, he condoled the deaths and prayed for the peace of the departed souls.
Governor JP Rajkhowa also expressed shock and grief at the loss of lives in the mishap. Conveying sincere condolences to the bereaved families, the Governor offered prayers for eternal peace of the departed souls.
PTI adds: Senior police and administration officials in the district could not be contacted due to poor telecommunication link. The district is 350 km from capital Itanagar.
