14-day police custody for Sonitpur DTO

GUWAHATI, April 10 - District Transport Officer (DTO) of Sonitpur Prasenjit Ghosh, arrested on Monday in connection with the cash-for-jobs scam in the Assam Public Service Commission (APSC), was today produced before the Court of Special Judge, Assam, which remanded him to 14-day police custody.

As in all the previous arrests in connection with the case, special public prosecutor Bijon Kumar Mahajan sought the maximum period of remand for the accused, which was accordingly granted by the Court in view of the gravity of the offence.

Ghosh, who appeared in the APSC examination 2014 and subsequently got posted in 2016 as the DTO, Kamrup (Metro), has been charged with his securing his job by payment of a huge amount of cash. Ghosh�s bail application which was filed today will be heard on April 24 when the case diary has also been called.

Dibrugarh Police today also produced six other recently arrested ACS, APS and allied service officials, following the expiry of their police remand period.

The officials who include Rituraj Gogoi, SDO (Dhakuakhana), Kaushik Kalita, Assistant Commandant, IRBn (Dakhin Salmara), Satyajit Sarkar, Assistant Employment Officer (Majuli), Barnali Devi, Tax Inspector (Nalbari), Abhishek Borbora, Excise Inspector (Rangiya) and Joydev Mahanta, Circle Officer (Bajali) were remanded to judicial custody.

Investigating officer of the case Surjeet Singh Panesar and additional investigating officer Subhasish Baruah were also present in the court.
