12 hurt as miscreants attack rally to mark Ayodhya bhoomi pujan

TEZPUR, Aug 5 - A tense situation prevails in Thelamara-Sutipahar (Bhora Singri) area under Thelamara PS under Barchala LAC in Sonitpur district after suspected Bangladeshi nationals, illegally settled in the area, attacked a rally taken out today by the local people led by Dhekiajuli unit of Bajrang Dal, Ramsena and Vishwa Hindu Parishad to mark the bhoomi pujan of Ram Mandir at Ayodhya.

In the incident, at least 12 members of Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Ram Sena were injured. It is to be mentioned here that to mark the Ram Mandir bhoomi pujan, the Dhekiajuli unit of Bajrang Dal, Ramsena and Vishwa Hindu Parishad took out a rally in the Barchala area and, at last, the rally approached towards the Gouri Mandir that exists in a hillock in the area, popularly known as Suti-Pahar for performing puja on the occasion. However, the suspected Bangladeshis attacked the rally with lethal arms seriously injuring 12 participants.

The attackers even kept about 25 persons captive for a long time and set ablaze 12 motorcycles and a Tata Magic van. On receiving information, police and security forces rushed to the spot and safely rescued the captive members.

Police also resorted to firing to disperse the mob thereby bringing the situation under control. Deputy Commissioner, Sonitpur, along with senior police officials from the district headquarter rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. The district administration has urged all to maintain peace, tranquillity and communal harmony.
