12-hr Assam bandh called

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 11 - The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) has called a 12-hour Assam bandh from 5 am in protest against the Union Governments decision to grant entry and stay rights to Hindu migrants who have fled from Bangladesh and Pakistan owing to religious persecution.

Flood relief activities and essential services have been exempted from the strike.

The AJYCP asserted that Assam cannot take the burden of additional migrants, as cross-border infiltration has reached alarming proportions in the State.

It is an insult to the Assam movement, Assam Accord and also the people of Assam. The Union Government must roll back its decision, said AJYCP general secretary Rana Pratap Barua.

The youth body also stressed that the deadline for accepting migrants, irrespective of religion, agreed upon in the Assam Accord, must be accepted at any cost.

The bandh has been supported by the All Bodo Students Union, All Assam Muttock Yubak Chhatra Sanmilan, All Dimasa Students Union, Karbi Students Union, Goria Moria Deshi Jatiya Parishad, Sonowal Kachari Students Union, All Assam Muttock Sanmilan, All Assam Madahi Students Union, All Assam Manipuri Students Union, Chutia Yuba Sanmilan, Moran Students Union and Asom Gana Parishad.
