12-hour Dhemaji bandh hits normal life

DHEMAJI, March 11 - The 12-hour Dhemaji bandh today from 5 am to 5 pm called by the Dhemaji district unit of Sodou Asam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Sanmilan in protest against the vandalism and anti-Assamese slogans by the Nikhil Bharat Bangali Udbastu Samannay Samiti (NiBBUSS) activists on March 6 at Silapathar while taking out a mass rally in demand of Indian citizenship for the Hindu Bangladeshis, passed off peacefully, with no major untoward incident, expect lathi-charge by police at a place.

The activists led by Chinmoy Sarmah, president of Dhemaji district unit of Sodou Asam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Sanmilan and Raki Bora, secretary of the organisation, blocked the roads, lit vehicle tyres at various places, including Dhemaji Tiniali, Chariali, Nagakhelia, Lalung Tiniali, Shripani, Sissiborgaon, Silapathar etc.

Normal life in Dhemaji was badly hit during the bandh as all shops, business establishments and financial institutions, including educational institutions at Dhemaji town and its adjacent areas remained closed during the entire bandh period.

However, police caned a group of people to disperse them at Lalung Tiniali , following which some people were reported to be injured.
