11 convicted in GS Road molestation case

GUWAHATI, Dec 7 � The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup today convicted 11 accused in the infamous July 9 GS Road molestation case, including prime accused Amarjyoti Kalita while journalist Gaurab Jyoti Neog along with three others were acquitted from all charges.

Kalita and 10 others accused have been convicted under IPC Sections 143, 341, 323 and 354, with the last section dealing with outraging modesty of a woman carrying the highest term of two years in jail and a fine of Rs 2,000.

The convicts would serve a term of six months and pay fine of Rs 500 under Section 143, fine of Rs 500 under Section 341 and jail term of one year under Section 323. All the sentences will run concurrently.

Besides Amarjyoti Kalita, those convicted include Nabajyoti Baruah, Nabajyoti Deka, Dhanraj Basfor, Sikandar Basfor, Ghanshyam Malik, Deepak Deb, Puspendra Das, Deba Das, Rubul Ali and Rupkanta Kalita.

Gaurab Jyoti Neog, Hafizuddin, Jiyumoni Deka and Diganta Basumatary were acquitted by the court giving them the benefit of doubt. One of the accused is being tried by the Juvenile Justice Board as he is a minor.

Journalist Guarab Jyoti Neog, when contacted, said, �The last few months have been tough for me and my family members but today�s judgment has come as a big relief. As expected, I got the justice.�

A girl was groped and molested by a gang of bystanders, many in inebriated state, when she was coming out from a pub after a party with friends on July 9 evening on the GS Road.

A Special Investigation Team was constituted to probe the case.
