108 ambulance service gears up for exigencies

By City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, Dec 30 - GVK EMRI, the agency that runs the emergency ambulance service in Assam, has said that for the coming New Year celebrations, the stretch of the national highway running alongside Guwahati and its nearby areas, has been marked as a high accident-prone zone.

The agency revealed that people from popular picnic spots usually report many emergencies. As such, it has appealed to the picnickers to follow certain precautions to make sure that their revelry does not get spoiled due to avoidable emergencies.

The emergency ambulance service provider stated that the areas in and around Guwahati city where the maximum number of road accidents were reported last year are Sonapur, Khetri, Jorabat, Gorchuk, Basistha Chariali, Amingaon, Changsari, Baihata Chariali and Hajo.

In the meantime, based on its previous records, GVK EMRI has predicted that during the New Year celebrations this time, around 1,700 cases of various incidents are expected to be reported on December 31 and around 2,000 cases on January 1 across the State. On these two days, road traffic accidents may rise to 120 to 150 cases per day in the State on December 31 and January 1 from the current average of 70 such accidents per day.

Assault cases may also rise to 35-40 cases per day in the State from the current normal occurrence of 20 cases per day.

Regarding food poisoning, the period covering the last week of December and the first week of January may witness an increase in drug or poisoning cases, averaging 15-20 cases per day, whereas acute abdomen cases may increase to 80-110 per day throughout the State with a rise of 20-40 cases from the current normal occurrence of such cases, it said. To tackle the emergency situation, GVK EMRI has made a plan for manpower availability keeping in mind the projected call flow.

As prevention is always better than cure, all are requested to set their own dos and donts in order to avoid avoidable emergencies like road accidents, food poisoning, etc. A little bit of patience and alertness always helps make festive celebrations happy. On these festive days, all are requested to treat the 108 Mrityunjoy Ambulance team as their brothers and sisters, as they will be on emergency duties while all of us will be on festive mood, the statement said.

People are requested to extend their cooperation to serve them better. In case of any suggestion or dissatisfaction, any person can call 108 instead of arguing or assaulting the staff on duty, the GVK EMRI management appealed to the New Year revellers.
