100-bed wing, COVID-19 testing lab inaugurated at Tezpur

TEZPUR, May 30 - With an aim to bolster the government�s fight against COVID-19, Health Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday inaugurated a 100-bed Maternity and Child Health Wing at the Kanaklata Civil Hospital in Tezpur, which will be converted into a COVID-19 treatment facility.

The 100-bed wing, in a three-storeyed building, along with accommodation for staff, is located at Paruwa in Tezpur, and has been built at a cost of Rs 21.86 crore.

The facility became functional after its formal inauguration, but at the moment, it will be used as a COVID-19 treatment facility to treat asymptomatic patients in Sontipur district.

Symptomatic and more serious cases will be referred to Tezpur Medical College and Hospital, the other designated COVID-19 treatment facility in Sonitpur.

Health Minister Sarma was accompanied by Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Pijush Hazarika, Tezpur MP Pallab Lochan Das, Tezpur MLA Brindaban Goswami, Sootea MLA Padma Hazarika, Dhekiajuli MLA Ashok Singhal, Biswanath MLA Promod Borthakur, Borchalla MLA Ganesh Limboo, Sonitpur Deputy Commissioner Manavendra Pratap Singh and other officials.

Earlier, Sarma visited DRL-DRDO, Tezpur, and inaugurated the newly-created DRL Centre for COVID-19 testing facilities. He was briefed on the facilities by DRL Director Dr SK Dwivedi and his team of scientists.

Minister Sarma appreciated the laboratory�s contributions in the field of water testing and purification, vector-borne diseases and their management, biodegradation and waste treatment and border agriculture activities.

The Assam government has initiated efforts with DRDO and ICMR to develop DRL-DRDO, Tezpur as a recognised centre for COVID-19 sample testing. Sarma also held a meeting with the medical superintendent and doctors at Tezpur Medical College and Hospital in the presence of Sonitpur district administration officials to discuss the preparedness to tackle COVID-19 in the district.
