GUWAHATI, Sept 16 As many as ten persons have so far been tested positive for the dengue virus in the State and a few more suspected cases have been reported, confirmed reports of which are still awaited.

This was confirmed by Director, State Health Services Dr D Hojai while talking to The Assam Tribune today.

Informing that the origin of the virus has been tracked outside the State, Dr Hojai asserted that the department has already initiated a survey and team of Entomologists have been pressed into action to take stock of the situation, mostly in the urban areas. The team of Entomologists who are also assisted by the Malaria team has been asked to make door-to-door survey to ascertain the potential breeding areas inside the houses and initiate necessary measures.

The expert team would also study the mosquito breeding pattern during the survey. To prevent dengue fever, one must prevent the breeding of its carrier-the Aedes mosquitoes- mostly found inside the household, the potential breeding sites being flower pots, stagnant water found in abandoned tyres. One can get rid of the Aedes mosquito by frequently checking and removing stagnant water in the households, he pointed out. Aedes mosquitoes are identified by the black and white stripes on their body.

Though there is no reason to panic, making people aware of the viral disease is of paramount importance and the departments concerned are on the job, Dr Hojai claimed.

Asked about the medical preparedness in all the district headquarters, Dr Hojai stated that all medical colleges, public health centres and the civil hospitals have been issued specific instruction in this regard.
