10 seedlings each to be planted in 25 schools in every district

GUWAHATI, June 3 - As part of World Environment Day celebrations, the State Forest department and the Pollution Control Board, Assam (PCBA) have decided to plant 10 seedlings each in 25 schools in each district of the State.

The PCBA will provide the guards for the 8,250 seedlings to be planted in the schools. Besides that, plantation programmes in the premises of the industries will also taken up.

The PCBA Regional Office will organise the environment celebration functions to raise awareness among the common masses in Guwahati, Nalbari, Bongaigaon, Nagaon, Tezpur, Golaghat, Sivasagar, and Dibrugarh.

Meanwhile, as a part of the celebrations, the Board organised an open drawing and painting competition among the school students in different groups in Guwahati, Silchar, Bongaigaon, Nagaon, Tezpur, Golaghat, Sivasagar and Dibrugarh. The prizes of the drawing and painting competition and essay writing competitions will be distributed in the State-level function to be held at Silchar.

The PCBA has also published a leaflet in Assamese on the theme �Air pollution� and one bilingual (English and Assamese) newsletter (Parivesh Batori) as awareness-cum-education materials with an objective to raise awareness on air pollution.

Besides that, as per the directions of the Central Pollution Control Board, special programmes as a part of the Environment Day celebration are being organised in all the five non-attainment cities and towns of Assam � Guwahati, Nalbari, Silchar, Sivasagar and Nagaon � with a perspective to improve the air quality of those places.

The Forest Department and the PCBA are jointly organising the State-level function at the Police Parade Ground, Silchar, where Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya will take part. The theme for 2019 is �Beat air pollution�.

The Head of the Department of Ecology and Environmental Sciences, Assam University, Silchar, Dr Parthankar Choudhury, has been invited to deliver the keynote address to facilitate an elaborate discussion on the theme.
