10 Manipur films to be screened at MIFF

Imphal, Feb 4 � Ten films form Manipur will be screened in the weeklong 11th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) which began in Mumbai yesterday.

The five films to be screened in the competitive section are Khwairakpam Bishwamitra�s documentary Boiling Blood, Bobby Wahengbam�s documentary Roshni, Subhash E�s short film The Sun is not still Setting, Chaoba Thiyam�s short film Eye of an I and Bhumenjoy Konsam�s animation film Tiger Head.

The other five films � Oken Amakcham�s Ratan Thiyam � the man of theatre, Haobam Ronel�s My story, Haobam Paban Kumar�s Mr India, Romi Meitei�s Cease Baby�s whimpering cry and A Priyobarta�s film Pung � the rhythm of paradise � will be screened in the non-competitive and Northeast section of the festival, being held at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) at Nariman Point in Mumbai.

A total of 64 films were selected for the competition section and 43 for the non-competition section. This year the fest has received a record 864 entries from 37 countries.

Young and independent film director Chaoba Thiyam said his film, (a short film or compilation of experimental shots), is a visual poetry on the ongoing situation.

�In my film, I showed the chaotic situation of the region and the search for a hero with or without any cinematic language,� he said.

Chaoba, who had previously directed the documentary film Gwangju prize for Human Rights: Irom Sharmila 2007, is a video editor of NE TV, Manipur Bureau. He was the cameraman and editor of a film Real, which is now in the archive of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

According to BM Sunzu, executive producer of the 15-minute short film Eye of an I, said that it took a full year to complete it, as it visualizes Manipur differently.

Manipur�s noted film critic RK Bidur also bagged the best critic award while a young mass communication teacher Elangbam Natasha won best narration award in another Manipuri film Sanakeithel (Royal Market).

The President of India will present the awards consisting gold medals and cash prizes in March 2010.
