GUWAHATI, Feb 4 - The All Assam Students� Union and 30 other organisations today sat on a 10-hour hunger strike across the State in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
According to the central leadership of AASU, the protest was carried out by all its anchalik committees in their respective areas.
In Guwahati, the All Guwahati Students� Union (AGSU) carried out the hunger strike from 6 am to 4 pm beside the Dighalipukhuri, where, according to a statement issued by the student body, around 100 of its members took part. They were joined by representatives from various organisations and students from many educational institutions of the city.
Meanwhile, on the fourth day of budget session of the Assam Assembly today, the Asom Anusuchit Jati Parishad (AAJP) staged a sit-in demonstration at Last Gate here in support of its demands including withdrawal of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
The AAJP charter of demands, copies of which were submitted to the Chief Minister and the Minister for Welfare of Plains Tribes and Backward Classes, also includes formation of a separate commissionerate for the plains tribes and backward classes of Assam, autonomy to the OBC Development Council, a new Act to issue OBC certificate, proper implementation of the OBC reservation Act in both government and non-government institutions, an end to the curtailment of funds for development of OBC people, a recruitment drive to fill up all backlog posts reserved for OBC candidates, scholarship hike for OBC students, appointment of one OBC member in the Assam Public Service Commission, reservation of a Lok Sabha seat in the Brahmaputra Valley for OBC people and census in all OBC-inhabited villages of the State.
