By Raju Das

SHILLONG, Aug 12 Meghalaya Police is on high alert following intelligence input about the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) cadres infiltrating into India from Bangladesh to disrupt Independence Day celebrations.

Minster in-charge of Home HDR Lyngdoh said that the police have intelligence input of 10 to 12 HNLC cadres managing to sneak into India from Bangladesh with weapons. Police is on their look-out, Lyngdoh said.

Following the report, the police have thrown a tight security blanket in and around the city and extensive search operations are being conducted in sensitive areas/pockets of the State capital and its suburbs.

The police are also for the first time using motorbikes to conduct patrol duties in the city. Several such police patrol motorbikes were seen in the city. Moreover, check points have been erected at various points and vehicles are being thoroughly checked in the city and the National Highways.

Earlier this month police arrested a top HNLC cadre Aiborlang Khartani alias Saddam Hussein along with two AK-47s and ammunitions from Pynthorsale village in Jaintia Hills. One of his accomplices, however, managed to escape. Khartani and his accomplice sneaked into India from Bangladesh.

HNLC this year has called a 36-hour bandh from 6 pm of August 14, instead of the routine 24-hour bandh called each year to boycott Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations. Besides the 36-hour bandh, the militant outfit also called a night curfew on August 12 and 13 from 10 pm to 5 pm, on both the days.

The HNLC wants to make its presence felt. However, police are on its job and there is no cause for worry, Lyngdoh stated.

Meanwhile, a rock show has been organised, besides the customary Independence Day parade at the Polo Ground. In stark contrast, the banned Achik National Volunteers Council is organising a rock show themselves in Garo Hills to celebrate Independence Day besides the administrations own celebrations.
