NORTH LAKHIMPUR, April 30 One person was killed in police firing over a land dispute in a border area of Lakhimpur district. The incident took place at Harmutty, 30 km west of North Lakhimpur, on Tuesday afternoon when a police team was allegedly attacked by Lengera Bhumiz, a land broker over a dispute regarding the sale of a plot of land.

The owner of the land, Lathi Bhumiz, sold her plot of land in 85 Fishi Grant areas under Harmutty police outpost to one Devajeet Chutia of Harmutty some days back. However, Lathi Bhumiz has been bullied and intimidated by her relative Lengera Bhumiz over the sale of the land for quite some time. After that Lathi Bhumiz lodged a complaint against Lengera Bhumiz at the Harmutty police outpost.

Following this, the inspector-in-charge of the police outpost, Suruj Doley along with a team of constables visited Lathi Bhumizs residence with the buyer of the land, Devajeet Chutia for an inquiry. At that time Lengera Bhumiz allegedly attacked Devajeet Chutia with a machete, chopping off his one hand. The stunned police personnel then opened fire in the air to disarm the assailant, but an unfazed Lengera attacked officer Doley, injuring him on the back with the same weapon.

At this point, the police fired shots at the assailant. A seriously injured Lengera Bhumiz was rushed to the North Lakhimpur Civil Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The incident has created great sensation in the entire district.
