1 killed, 4 hurt in Goalpara IED blast

GOALPARA, July 23 � One person was killed and four others, including a minor sustained serious injuries when an IED, which was planted on a bicycle parked outside a small makeshift tea stall near the Krishnai Police Station, went off around 7.55 am today.

The deceased has been identified as Mujibur Rahman (58), owner of the tea stall, while the injured were Kashimuddin Khan (51), Fazlul Hoque (58), Aktar Hussein (42) and Zehirul Islam (13).

According to Superintendent of Police Nitul Gogoi, the blast was triggered allegedly by the ULFA (anti-talk) faction aimed at disrupting peace and normalcy ahead of the Independence Day and also at hitting the security forces who are carrying out anti-terrorist operations in the district.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner (in-charge) Vivekananda Choudhury said that the district administration has provided Rs 30,000 as funeral expenses to the family of the deceased and already it has initiated the process of getting sanctioned an ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh from the State and Rs 3 lakh from the Central Government.

Besides, Rs 10,000 was provided for treatment to each of the injured, who have now been shifted to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
