1 killed, 2 hurt in hit-and-run case

By STAFF correspondent

SHILLONG, May 28 - A Meghalaya Home Guards volunteer was killed and two others were injured when a speeding vehicle hit them at Khliehtyrshi on the Jowai Bypass in West Jaintia Hills district late last night.

The police said the driver of the vehicle, one Samim Ahmed Mazarbhuiya of Cachar district in Assam, was arrested after an extensive manhunt.

The incident happened when policemen at a check-point signalled Mazarbhuiya to stop. However, he did not stop and rammed his vehicle into the barricades. The Home Guards volunteer was killed due to this.

The vehicle bearing the registration number, AS-11-H-1957, was later intercepted, but the accused driver and the other occupants escaped, taking advantage of darkness.

After a massive search operation that lasted till this morning, the driver and three occupants of the vehicle were detained. The occupants were, however, released later.
