NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Sept 9 - Hemanta Chatradhara, one of the accused, was arrested by police last night as North Lakhimpur remained tense following the murder of a college student named Imran Ahmed.

An uneasy calm prevailed in the town since yesterday as police failed to take action even two weeks after the incident in which the student was attacked. Imran Ahmed (18), a HS 2nd year student of Lakhimpur Commerce College was attacked by two students with sharp weapons on August 23 near Tyagshetra here.

A seriously wounded Imran was subsequently rushed to North Lakhimpur Civil Hospital and then shifted to a private nursing home on the same day. As his condition deteriorated, Imran was shifted to Dispur Hospital in Guwahati, where he succumbed to his injuries on September 7.

An FIR was lodged at North Lakhimpur Police Station by the victims family on the day of the incident. But the slackness and complicity by the police left the entire incident uninvestigated with the accused allegedly roaming freely. Before his death, Imran gave a statement identifying his attackers as Hemanta Chatradhara of Mahora-Gohaingaon and Lohit Borgohain of Chukulibhoriya. The victims statement video, which went viral in social media, has made his fellow students furious since Thursday as they decried the police inaction despite the lodging of an FIR almost two weeks ago.

On Friday, thousands of students of Lakhimpur Commerce College blocked the road in front of their alma mater and demanded justice for the slain student.
