1,607 GMC workers’ posts to be regularised

GUWAHATI, Jan 29: After protests by five workers’ unions of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation recently, the Guwahati Development Department has decided to initiate the process for regularisation of posts in various departments of the GMC.


Members of Guwahati Municipal Workers’ Union, Municipal Engineers’ Association, Harijan Mazdoor Union, Water Supply Workers’ Union and All Assam Harijan Mazdoor Union organised a three-day protest at the GMC office premises from January 20. The unions had also threatened to go on an indefinite strike.
GDD Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya had called a meeting on January 26 where representatives from the five unions were present. The minister subsequently on Thursday directed the Commissioner of Guwahati Municipal Corporation to regularise 1607 posts within February 10.


The minister also directed the Commissioner to regularise the posts based on educational qualifications.


Bhattacharya also assured the unions that no temporary employee will be terminated irrespective of regularisation. He also promised to take an initiative for the creation of a corpus fund for payment of pensions etc.
