DIBRUGARH, April 18 - Bihu Sanmelan without the performance of an artist or presence of a popular personality, particularly from the silver screen, perhaps cannot be conceptualized in the present day context.
Celebrities of any rank, either from the music world, literary field or film industry, have always added charm to the exhaustive Bihu revelry events everywhere. They are driving force to attract sponsors and donors as well.
The community Bihu Sanmelans in the district here are also preparing to host gala events featuring states prominent singers, actors and comedians alongside the open sessions, Bihu dance, singing and sports competitions.
Singing sensation Zubeen Garg, whose name has been highlighted in the event brochures as mukhyo akarshan (main attraction), is expected to perform in at least five separate Bihu Sanmelans in the district. The versatile musician-cum-film director, producer and actor will take to the stage in Boiragimoth here to conclude the three-day Boiragimoth Rongali Bihu Sonali Jayanti Samaroh at Jalan Stadium near Don Bosco Higher Secondary School on April 21. His next performance will be on April 24 at the Kendriya Rongali Utsav on Chowkidinghee ground. The Rongali Utsav at Chowkidinghee is being organised by All Dibrugarh Students Union. Zubeen will also perform at Tingkhong Anchalik Rongali Bihu Sanmelan on April 25, in Naharkatia on May 1 and in oil town Duliajans Bihutoli on May 11.
Other prominent personalities likely to appear in separate Bihu Sanmelans in the district include Madhurima Choudhury, Arun Hazarika, Barsha Rani Bishaya, Urmila Mahanta, Bibek Bora, Diplina Deka, Bhranti Medhi, Amrita Gogoi, Ramen Danah, Niharika Hazarika, Sumi Chowdang, Mumur Krishna, Anupam Talukdar, Sanjay Khargoria, Samar Hazarika and Karuna Handique among others.
The estimated budget for all the major community Bihu events is over Rs 20 lakh and about half or more than the total financial plan is put aside to purchase the performance and presence of the celebrities.
Today Bihu function is incomplete without the presence of a celebrity or without the performance of a much-admired artiste. They add glamour to the event and people also demand for them, said Ajoy Bhuyan, one of the chief organizers of Boiragimoth Rongali Bihu Sonali Jayanti Samaroh and President, Navarupa Sangha, Boiragimoth.
