Zeliang to attend meet on Naga accord in Manipur

By Newmai News

SENAPATI, Oct 11 - In a first of its kind move, representatives from all the Naga villages in Manipur will meet at Tagaramphung village, also called Yaikongpao, near the Senapati district headquarters on October 19 to deliberate on the historic Indo-Naga Framework Agreement, land and village administration and the political situation that is confronting the present State of Manipur.

Functionaries of the village authorities from over 800 Naga villages in Manipur will participate in the event which has been christened as the First Conference of the Naga Village Authority of South Nagalim. The programme is being organised by the United Naga Council (UNC). Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang will be the chief guest and Naga Hoho president Chuba Ozukum will attend the programme as the guest of honour. Noted advocate from Manipur High Court, R Daniel will speak on the topic, Land and Village Administration.

UNC president Gaidon Kamei informed Newmai News Network this evening that the meet is crucial as our ancestral lands have been exploited by the Manipur government in the name of development.

On the pretext of setting up of multi-purpose projects, the Manipur government has been exploiting our ancestral lands. If this is not checked urgently, we will be left with no land, Gaidon Kamei said. The UNC president termed the Inner Line Permit-related movement in the Manipur valley and the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Meiteis as ploys to grab the ancestral lands of Nagas.

Meanwhile, the UNC general secretary S Milan has appealed transporters to halt traffic along the National Highway-2 at the Senapati headquarters section from 10 am till 2 pm on October 19.
