Zaheer laid to rest

GUWAHATI, May 31 � Former Ranji cricketer Zaheer Iqbal Alam was laid to rest at South Sarania cemetery here this evening. His body reached here this morning from Bangalore where he breathed his last yesterday.

Zaheer�s body was taken to RG Baruah Sports Complex where several sports organisations offered their respects to the noted cricketer of the State. As an useful batsman of the Assam Ranji team from 1988 to 1995, Zaheer was able to draw the attention of the opponent bowlers.

Organisations like Assam Cricket Association, Guwahati Sports Association, Gauhati Town Club, Assam Sports Journalists Association, New Star Club, Star Sporting Club, Guwahati Cricket Coaching Centre along with State players like Zaved Zaman, Nasir Gul Khan, Subharajit Saikia, Sauvik Das, Parag Das, Mukut Das, Devojit Saikia, Gautam Dutta, Rajesh Bora, Utpal Das, Sajjad Hussain, coach Sandipan Debnath paid tributes to Zaheer.

In respect of the noted player, the ACA flag placed on the body on the body by assistant secretary Ajoy Sarma.

CM condoles death: Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today condoled the death of Zaheer Iqbal Alam. Gogoi said, in a message to his family members said that in Alam�s death, the State has lost a gem of a cricketer. �His untimely demise is a great loss to Assam cricket. He passed away at a time when he had so much to contribute for the promotion of the game,� he added. The Chief Minister expressed his sympathy to the members of the bereaved family.
