GUWAHATI, March 8: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has collaborated with well-known Assamese youtuber Dimpu Baruah for sensitising the public about the importance of solid waste management and cleanliness of the city. The main aim of the GMC is to make Guwahati one of the cleanest cities in the country.

“Due to lack of awareness, waste is mostly managed in an unorganised manner from its generation source. Bringing about a change in the behaviour of the common public by segregation of waste is the key to proper management of the solid waste. Dimpu Baruah is a known youtuber of Assam with a huge fan following. We believe having him can be very effective in driving home the message of the importance of citizens’ participation in making the city clean,” a senior official GMC said.

“Baruah has already done a short video on waste management activity of GMC and it was uploaded on social media platforms. It has been an immediate hit with over 4,32,550 views,” he added.

“Baruah who has a unique way of presentation has been able to connect with the audience in the desired manner, fulfilling the motive of getting the audience’s attention,” the official further added.

The GMC has taken up a project where collaborating with Dimpu Baruah is a part of it. Altogether 500 tonnes of waste is generated in the city.

Guwahati city secured 356th position in the Swachh Survekshan Survey 2020 carried out by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. It had secured 303rd position in 2019. The GMC is also sensitising the public on the app Swachhata-MoHUA where citizens can provide their feedback regarding cleanliness of the city.

“Citizens play a vital role in the swachhata ranking released by the Union Ministry. We also want participation of the Guwahati residents in this regard,” the official said.
