Youths� view on water diversion

GUWAHATI, Oct 8 � Youths from different profession on Saturday expressed the apprehension that water diversion by neighbouring China will cause a serious challenge to India and insisted that India put pressure on China on the issue.

Participating in �Caf� Conversation� organized by Universal Team for Social Action and Help (UTSAH) in association with Youth Forum on Foreign Policy (YFFP), the young people shared their opinion on water issue which has of late been getting high attention in the country because of China�s activities on the Brahmaputra. The queries from the young people were answered by noted journalist Wasbir Hussain who said that the projected water war is a reality and not a myth. He mentioned that three factors have created a condition for water war and they were rapid urbanization, population explosion and climate change.

Referring to China�s attempts to divert the Brahmaputra, Hussain pressed for utilisation of the river by Assam to counter China�s attempts, while the participants stressed that India adopt a strong foreign policy to face every challenge coming from China including the water threat.
