JORHAT, Aug 19 - Allegations of illegally collecting parking fees from two-wheelers and cars in the busy KB Road here by youths claiming to be agents of a lessee reportedly authorised by the Jorhat Municipal Board (JMB) have been reported.
After receiving such complaints, this Correspondent visited the area and was asked for the fees for parking a scooter by a youth, who when asked about his identity, said he was collecting on behalf of a lessee authorised by JMB.
When contacted, JMB chairman Jayanta Borkakaty told this newspaper that the Jorhat Municipal Board had not permitted any lessee to collect parking fees from vehicles along the KB Road.
He said that any person collecting money in the name of parking fee from vehicles was illegal. The chairman said he will look into the matter and will take necessary action for preventing such an act.
Local traders and residents said that the boys under reference had been collecting parking fees from vehicles since the past two months, mostly from people who visit the area for different purposes.
Jorhat Superintendent of Police Vaibhab Nimbalkar said that police will inquire into the allegation and take action if anybody was found collecting money illegally in the said locality.
