Young farmers drafting emulative success stories

CHANDRAPUR, Feb 5 � Verdant Chandrapur that has always impressed the visitor is all set to change the socio-economic scenario by its inclination towards hard work and a determination to contribute towards the economic growth of the State.

What is really significant in this change is that the youth is taking the leadership and through dint of their hard work they have succeeded in scripting emulative success stories. It was orange and rubber cultivation for the youth, and now many have taken to double cropping and the area which is also a most sought-after picnic spot on account of its beauty and laidback ambience is about to witness a potato boom.

Parashar Deka, who completed his MSc from Gauhati University said that farming is now a profitable option as returns are high when one puts in labour and dedication. It needs to be mentioned here that Deka is involved in potato cultivation and he also has a fishery and is into commercially viable flower cultivation.

�Annually we record a profit of Rs 16 lakh and more from all our agricultural ventures,� said Deka, mentioning that hard work was the one factor that has ensured success for the young farmers.

Another farmer, Bipin Teron, who is into rubber cultivation in a big way said that agriculture was a rewarding venture if one had the will to continue and slog. From his 200 bighas of rubber plantation, Bipin has been earning minimum one lakh profit every month.

�We are into orange cultivation and have adopted double cropping method for the first time,� said Uddhav Rohang, a member of Lakhmi Self Help Group (SHG). This SHG has gone for double cropping over an area of 35 bighas and all the members believe in hard work.

Agriculture minister Nilamoni Sen Deka who visited a double cropping site at Borvilla here on Saturday lauded the work of the youth and said that Assam in the coming years is all set to witness a revolution in the agriculture sector that would be ushered in by the youth.

�Now we are concentrating on motivating the farmers to adopt the method of double cropping. And we have received good response from the farmers and particularly from the young people who are educated but have taken to agriculture as their source of livelihood,� said Deka, adding that the double cropping has increased the production and improved the living standards of the people.
