Year of Light observed at Lalsingh Academy

GUWAHATI, March 8 - The science and mathematics facilitators of Lalsingh Academy High School here observed the International Year of Light on March 3 with a day-long programme, on the school premises. Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC) provided the financial support for the function. The focal theme of the day was � �Light and light-based technologies�, stated a press release here today.

The facilitators organised several competitions among the school students, which included the ones like model making, extempore speech and drawing posters, among others. Students from several high and higher secondary schools took part in the competitions.

Later, a meeting was held with headmistress of the school Bogimai Doloi in the chair. Addressing the function as the chief guest, Dr Barindra Kumar Sarma, a retired professor of Gauhati University, underlined the need for developing scientific temperament among the students by raising their thinking capacity.

Ramendra Medhi, senior education officer of the Regional Science Centre, Khanapara demonstrated various light-based activities, which were found to be very encouraging and motivating for the students. ASTEC project scientists Monalisha Das and Mriganka Bora interacted with the students on the occasion. Head-in-charge of the ASTEC Science and Technology Division, Dr RK Barman stressed on the need to develop a proper platform for the students of the rural areas so as to boost their talents.

ASTEC Science and Technology Division scientific officer Biman Barua, subject teacher of Udaipur Shanti Niketan, Bejera, Kamrup, also attended the programmes of the day. At the meeting, prizes were also distributed among the winners of the competitions. The meeting was also addressed by Lalsingh Academy science facilitator Siva Prasad Upadhyaya and mathematics facilitator of the same school Noinmati Kumari Sah.
