WW II bombing remembered

IMPHAL, April 20 - People of Khurai in Manipur�s Imphal East district paid homage to the victims of World War II bombing at Khurai Chingangbam Mandop during the 74th commemorative function organised at the historic mandop on Thursday.

The function was attended by relatives of victims of the War. Sahitya Academy awardee Khuraijam Nimaicharan and World War II researcher Yumnam Rajeshwar attended the function.

Japanese air force dropped a bomb at Imphal for the first time on May 10, 1941. Although the first bombing did not cause much casualty, the second bombing on April 20, 1943 at Khurai Thangjam Leikai fell on Chingangbam Mandop where a large number of people were attending a religious feast.

The attack resulted in loss of 100 lives, but only few were identified. The number of victims listed was just 28. However, Yumnam Rajeshwar at the observation presented names of 69 victims to the committee.
