Writers� meet gets under way in Manipur

IMPHAL, Dec 29 - The Eastern Regional Writers� Meet began at the auditorium located on the Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy premises here this afternoon.

The inaugural ceremony was followed by a short story reading session.

Eminent theatre personality Bratya Basu, who is also the Minister for Information Technology and Electronics, West Bengal, along with convener of the Eastern Regional Board of Sahitya Akademi Subodh Sarkar, eminent Manipuri critic H Behari Singh, officer-in-charge of Sahitya Akademi, Eastern region, Mihir Kumar Sahoo, among others, attended the inaugural function.

Convener of Manipuri Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi, N Kirankumar Singh said that nearly two dozen poets and writers from eastern India, who write in eight different languages � Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Nepali, Maithili, Manipuri, Santali and Odia � are attending the meet, jointly organised by Naharol Sahitya Preme Samit Imphal and Sahitya Akademi.

On the future of Manipuri literature, Subodh Sarkar said that poetry forms a major part of Manipuri literature and he has been reading Manipuri poetry for the last three decades.

�Now the Indian literature programme cannot do without Manipuri poetry,� Sarkar said.

�The Manipuri poetry is a major part of the mainstream Indian literature. So, I think the future of Manipuri literature is great. We are all waiting for new and upcoming poets, and those with different voices,� he said.

In the two-day meet, apart from poetry reading session, the writers will also take part in various discussions during which they will share their views on contemporary writing.
