Writer Kailash Sarma passes away

GUWAHATI, Dec 30 - Noted Assamese short story writer and novelist Kailash Sarma died following a cardiac arrest at his son�s residence in Gurugram near New Delhi in the wee hours today. He was 74.

Born in 1945 at Disoikash (Baligaon) village near Jorhat, Sarma spent his entire career in Namrup where he served in various capacities in the Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Ltd.

A former central executive committee member of the Asam Sahitya Sabha, he served as secretary and president of the Sabha�s Namrup unit in 1981-82 and 2003-04.

Author of over 100 short stories and several novels, he was best known for Bolukat Biyoli, a novel that got wide acclaim when it was serialised in Prantik in the mid-1980s. Many of his novels and short stories were broadcast by AIR, Dibrugarh.

Also a stage actor, he was an active member of the Asam Natya Sanmilan and associated with the Baligaon Sanmilani Natya Mandir. He leaves behind his wife, a son and a daughter.
