World Rhino Day tomorrow in Manas

By Correspondent

BARPETA, Sept 20 - WWF and MEWS in association with Manas National Park-cum-Tiger Project authority will observe World Rhino Day on September 22.

An open meeting will be organised at Nehru High School, Bansbari, near the park on the occasion. The director of the park, Aninda Swargiary and the Assistant Conservator of Forest, Dharanidhar Boro, will attend the meeting.

The main objective of the day is to make the people aware about the need of conservation of rhinoceroses. Besides, it aims to involve the local community in the conservation process.

As the number of this endangered species is declining day by day and the Manas National Park- cum-Tiger Project is selected as one of the suitable venues for protection, a great number of rhinos were translocated to this park in the recent past.

Though the efforts of the stakeholders to protect this mammal have borne fruits, a lot is still to be done in this respect. It is expected that the organisation of such events will help the cause.
