World Forestry Day observed at Kaziranga

KAZIRANGA, March 24 - With an objective to generate public awareness with regard to conservation of valuable species of plants and wild animals, the Corbett Foundation in association with Kaziranga National Park observed World Forestry Day at Kaziranga High School.

The programme was initiated by Divisional Forest Officer of Eastern Assam Wildlife Division ( Kaziranga), Rohini Ballav Saikia, Deputy Director of Corbett Foundation Dr Navin Sharma and Research Officer of Kaziranga National Park Robin Sharma.

Addressing the students and teaching community of Kaziranga High School, DFO Rohini Ballav Saikia appreciated the school authority for making the event successful and acknowledged the role by the students of the school.

In 1971, during the meeting of the 23rd General Assembly of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation, it was decided to observe March 21 as World Forestry Day in order to create awareness among the masses.

Dr Navin Pandey said that the idea was to create awareness about issues related to global warming and conservation of valuable species of flora and fauna in forest areas.

Research Officer Robin Sharma stressed on the fact that the students needed to understand the specific names of the valuable species of plants for conservation. After the sapling distribution programme as part of the itinerary, a screening of documentary was organised for the student community to increase awareness about forests and wildlife conservation.
