World Food Day observed at Sonitpur

TEZPUR, Oct 23 � With the theme �Family Farming: Feeding the World, Caring for the Earth�, the World Food Day was observed by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra of Sonitpur at the Napam Gaon Panchayat hall recently.

Considering the importance of family farming to uplift the nutritional and economic status, the programme was organised to create awareness of the same among the Anganwadi and ASHA workers. Dr Promod Chandra Deka, programme coordinator, KVK, Sonitpur, in his inaugural speech, emphasised the significance of the World Food Day.

�Malnutrition is a burning problem of today�s world. Inclusion of fruit and vegetable in our daily diet plays an important role in protecting us from various diseases.� This was the view of Arifa Mumtaz Begum, SMS, Home Science of KVK, Sonitpur. Naseema Rahman, SMS, Horticulture emphasised on kitchen gardening to fight against hidden hunger.

The remaining agricultural produces after consumption at household can also be sold in the local market to supplement the family budget, she said.

The importance of animal and fish protein in our daily diet was discussed by Rituparna Pegu, PA, Fishery. He also emphasised on the preservation of natural resources by practising organic farming. RAWEP students, Nitai Ghosh, chief area coordinator of Punioni Farmers� Club, Ira Goswami and Monjula Phukan, supervisor under ICDS and panchayat members also attended the programme and shared their views.
