GUWAHATI, Aug 12 - The Assam State Zoo celebrated the seventh World Elephant Day in partnership with the Wildlife of Africa Conservation Initiative.
The initiative aimed at inspiring �a growing generation, knowledgeable and motivated to take positive actions on behalf of the wildlife that share our land and sea with us and the environment.�
This is the first outreach programme of the Wildlife of Africa Conservation Initiative in India, coordinated by the first member of Team Wildlife Africa from India, Akash Harizan, a wildlife conservationist.
Many students took part in this event and a few differently-abled students also came to observe the Elephant Day.
The event started with an �interactive session� with Zoo elephants named �Madhavi� and �Fulfuli� during which students got the opportunity to feed the elephants, too. An art competition, a story competition and a quiz competition were also held in the Zoo premises.
World Elephant Day was launched on August 12, 2012, by the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation and Canadian documentary filmmaker Patricia Sims. World Elephant Day encourages individuals and organizations worldwide to take action, spread awareness, and share effective ways to help save and protect elephants and support the many commendable elephant conservation initiatives.
