World Elders� Day observed

GUWAHATI, Oct 3 - World Elders� Day was observed by the New Guwahati Probin Nagarik Sanstha, which is a unit of All Assam Senior Citizens� Association, in its office premises here on October 1, a press release stated.

A meeting on the occasion was held under the presidentship of DD Goswami, where Dr DN Dutta explained the significance of the day. Dr PD Boruah, general secretary of the association, while welcoming the invited guests, spoke elaborately on the action initiated by the government in solving various problems related to the senior citizens.

Ramani Kanta Deka, a retired government officer who was the chief guest at the meeting, highlighted the duties and responsibilities of the senior citizens so as to enable them to lead healthy and peaceful lives.

The meeting was also addressed by Prof Priyam Goswami, former Head of the Department of History, Gauhati University. She shed light on dementia amongst the aging population and action taken by the Dementia Society of India to mitigate the same. PK Borthakur, Dr Binod Goswami and Dulal Chandra Das also addressed the gathering.

In all, over 78 senior members of the Sanstha were felicitated on the occasion.
