Workshop on nagara naam held

NALBARI, May 11 � The Assam Nagara Naam Sangha organised a day-long workshop on nagara naam at Nalbari Harimandir on Sunday for the first time in the State.

The workshop conducted by Madhab Ch Deka, was inaugurated by Amulya Kalita, a journalist of the district. In his inaugural speech, Kalita laid stress on the formulation of a grammar for nagara naam, a popular folk culture of the State.

Taking part as a resource person, Dr Basanta Kumar Bhattacharya said that the artists of nagara naam should perform with proper pronunciation and in the correct form. He added that the nagara naam artists should not include modern songs in their repertoire. Another resource person, Achyut Deka, a renowned nagara naam artist said that in the name of modernisation, we should not avoid the old-age tradition of this performing art. He also stated that we should try to develop the nagara naam through some sort of a system. Another renowned artist of nagara naam, Baloram Baishya called upon the writers to be sincere in writing naams. He said that in the name of creating comedy, the writers should not include irrelevant topics. Baishya further added that the Sadou Assam Nagara Naam Sangha has decided to form an expert committee to analyse naams just before they are performed by the artists.

Earlier Kailash Talukdar, secretary of the Sadou Assam Nagara Naam Sangha explained the purpose of the workshop. A total of 300 pathaks of nagara naam from various lower Assam districts took part in the workshop.
