Workers urged to wage united struggle

SUALKUCHI, May 8 � May Day was observed at different places of Sualkuchi with day-long programmes.

At Sarulah, the outskirts of the silk village, the 123rd anniversary of the May Day was observed under the aegis of Bathan Sarulah Srihati Tant Silpi Santha. On the occasion at 7.30 am. Upen Das, retired teacher of Sualkuchi MV School as well as a veteran citizen of Sarulah area unfurled the red flag.

In his speech Das expressed serious concern over the sense of security of the labourers, atrocities committed against the workers, besides rift between the employers and the employees. He said the employees should unitedly stand up for their rights and dignity.

Addressing the gathering, Jogendra Bharali, adviser of Sualkuchi Tant Silpi Santha said that in the era of neo-liberalisation the unity among the workers has been broken up. An ocean of change took place in the process of production and appointment of workers. The true identity of the worker was lost due to division of workers in the nature of colour, caste, creed and religion, besides polarisation of the workers by divisive forces weakened the unity of the workers. He, therefore, called upon the workers and farmers to resist those divisive forces and to fight against social injustice.

Earlier, Bhupen Rajbanshi, another adviser of Sualkuchi Tant Silpi Santha explained the significance of May Day and discussed the problems being faced by the workers. Later, the people gathered at the flag hoisting site and paid tributes to the martyrs.

At Sualkuchi, May Day was celebrated by Sualkuchi Tant Silpi Santha and the CPM committee jointly.

Biren Das, working president of Sualkuchi Tant Silpi Santha unfurled the flag at Asokastami Kshetra at 10.30 am. Participating in the rally, Dr Atul Das, senior physician and noted social worker narrated the historical backgrounds of May Day. He said the fundamental rights granted for the workers were destroyed in the era of neo-economic policy and globalisation. He emphasised that the workers should fight for economic policy and globalisation. He emphasised that the workers should fight for economic emancipation and social security.

Later, a seminar on the relevance of celebrating May Day in the present situation of globalisation and liberalisation was held. The seminar was conducted by Biren Das, working president of Sulakuchi Tant Silpi Santha and participated in by Bhupen Rajbangshi and Kumud Das as speakers.
