AGARTALA, May 29 - Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb has asserted that his Government will not allow post-poll violence under any circumstances in the State.
Post-poll violence, which had been taking place in Tripura for long years, has been checked, Deb claimed while talking to reporters here.
�But I am not satisfied with the mere reduction in post-poll violence as the Government is totally against any violence. The law enforcement agencies will tackle violence with a firm hand,� the Chief Minister said on Tuesday evening.
Deb pointed out that only 186 poll-related cases were registered with the police during the entire exercise of the Parliamentary elections this year, while the figure was 439 in the 2018 Assembly elections. Even in the 2013 Assembly elections, the State witnessed post-poll violence.
Deb said the Government is in the process to provide compensation to those who have become victims of poll-related violence, but rejected any possibility of having an all-party meeting to prevent it.
The Chief Minister also appealed to the Opposition parties to refrain from making any inflammatory statement, which could lead to deterioration of the situation. �In a democratic set-up, Opposition parties have a role to deal with such issues with tolerance and patience. I believe the Opposition parties will also help the Government to stop the old tradition,� he said.
However, the Chief Minister ruled out any all-party meeting to stop post-poll violence, affirming that the situation was not that grave.
To a query on Pradesh Congress Committee president Pradyot Kishore Debbarman�s statement in Delhi on post-poll violence in the State, the Chief Minister said, �We must show restraint while making any statement on a sensitive issue.�
When asked about the possibility of the State�s representation in the Narendra Modi-led Government at the Centre, Deb said, �It is the prerogative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP national president Amit Shah to choose an effective team.�
Education Minister Ratan Lal Nath was also present in the press conference.
