Singer’s indecent remarks at award function

GUWAHATI, Feb 23: The Assam State Commission for Women (ASCW) has summoned singer Zubeen Garg and actress Nishita Goswami for a face-to-face hearing in the first week of March in connection with the indecent remarks made onstage by Zubeen at an award function in Guwahati a few weeks back.

The Commission, which took up a suo moto case in connection with the incident (ASCW/SM/03/2021), had asked the police to conduct an inquiry into the matter and submit a report to it.

“The police have submitted the report to the Women’s Commission and accordingly, we have sent notices to both the parties involved to come for a face-to-face hearing. The next course of action will be decided after we hear both the persons involved,” sources in the ASCW stated.

Zubeen Garg’s highly objectionable and indecent remarks on the actress during an award ceremony had created furore in social media, with a number of civil society organisations, women’s groups and individuals flaying the singer and seeking a public apology from him.

In the meantime, sources privy to the development said that actress Goswami has expressed her unwillingness to lodge an FIR against the singer.

“Whatever happened during the award night was on stage and on camera as well. There is no denying the fact that it was an unacceptable public behaviour. However, the Commission will hear what both the parties have to say over the matter,” sources added.
