GUWAHATI, March 8 - The Department of Psychology, Cotton College State University (CCSU) today organised a daylong seminar on the theme �Nari Shakti: Celebrating Womanhood� at the Kalaguru Bishnu Rabha Auditorium in the Cotton campus.
CCSU Vice Chancellor Prof Dhruba Jyoti Saikia, who inaugurated the seminar, laid stress on empowerment of women, issues of safety and security of women and their ability to speak freely.
Speaking on the occasion, Head of the Department of Psychology, Dr Dimpy Mahanta highlighted the challenges encountered by women in their day-to-day lives. She focused on how women should inspire and provide support to one another and be each other�s strength. She urged all the boys and men to acknowledge the contribution and presence of women in their lives, whether she is a mother, wife, daughter, sister or a friend.
Dr Mahanta also spoke about the various initiatives taken by the department to bring about community-based collaborations and spread mental health awareness among all sections of society.
Dr Anjali Prabha Daimari, social activist and recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award (in translation), encouraged the young girls and women to stand up for themselves and have the courage to exercise the power of their voice.
Suman Chandra, CEO of Maharashtra Rural Livelihood Missions and Skill sent a video message to the department�s HOD wherein she mentioned that women should tide over any kind of reluctance in their lives in order to prosper. Gender should never act as an impediment in the journey of the life of a woman, she said.
Amanjeet Kaur, DCP Traffic, Guwahati spoke about her personal journey, challenges and obstacles she had faced as a woman. She also laid emphasis on the importance and nurturance of self-belief amongst women.
Dr Sanghamitra Bora, consultant, palliative oncology at the North East Cancer Hospital & Research Institute (Guwahati) threw light on early cancer detection and importance of palliative care and medicines.
Nandita Sharma, advocate, Gauhati High Court emphasised the legal rights that every woman of the country should be aware of.
Nesmita Das, counselling psychologist and guest faculty of the Department of Psychology, CCSU, spoke about the importance of promoting mental health in women using psychological interventions.
The lectures were followed by an interactive session. More than 300 representatives from higher educational institutions across the State, faculty members, NGO workers, healthcare professionals among others, took part in the seminar.
